Losing Pietersen would be a disaster

Are the good times over? Lose KP and any advantage we had going into the 2013 Ashes will be lost If I was in a high profile cricket team, and my teammates followed a twitter account that extracted the Michael out of me mercilessly, I’d feel pretty insecure. I’d definitely question whether I wanted to play with them anymore – especially if I was already in dispute with the team’s governing body. I’d be even more tempted to jump ship if I knew there were other clubs out there willing to pay...

Who’d be a Windies fan right now?

I imagine that supporting the West Indies is a bit like being a Nottingham Forest fan. Your team used to be the best in the business, playing entertaining stuff that had neutrals purring, but humiliation is now as frequent and predictable as digs at the coalition government on BBC’s Question Time. And just when you think the Windies might be on the verge of a revival, they capitulate like lemmings at a cliff jumping party; which is probably what their fans will be organising too after their...

England selection committee loses its marbles

We’re really not surprised that England lost the first T20 yesterday. Judging by the team the England management put out, we can only assume they didn’t actually want to win. How many teams need three wicket-keepers? It’s ridiculous. Two usually suffices in sixteen man squads for five match test series, so why England needed three for a short T20 match is beyond us. If you can think of any rationale for such a perplexing strategy, please let us know. We phoned up all the psychiatric units of...

Go Jonny Go – Bairstow century floors Hyderabad XI

England 367-4 (50 overs). Hyderabad XI 114 (35.3 overs). England won by 253 runs It’s not often that a young cricketer emerges on the scene and blows everyone away – especially when that cricketer is English. Ok, so yesterday’s match was only a warm up against a Hyderabad XI, but to score 104no off just 53 balls is a pretty special achievement in any form of the game. The ginger tornado has landed. Maybe I’m just getting on a bit, but this new generation of England players look like schoolboys...

Heeere’s Jonny

The relationship between English cricket and the Indians has been somewhat strained this summer. After the controversial dismissals of Rahul Dravid (and the ensuing row about the DRS) many Indians genuinely seem to hate us. We’ve been accused of all kinds of things, from ‘double standards’ to cheating and ‘failing to observe the spirit of cricket’. Take a peek at this report from Indian TV after the Ian Bell ‘run out’ at Trent Bridge I’ve rarely heard such nonsense. Amongst other things the...
