The XXXX-up Factor

Things aren’t going well for the Aussies. Seven defeats in a row now, silly mistakes in the field, reported disharmony in the dressing room – it’s music to any England fan’s ears. And then there’s the captaincy controversy. We all know about Ponting’s weaknesses as a skipper, but now certain players are allegedly unhappy with Michael Clarke – whose aspirations to become Australia’s next great field general seem destined to end in general disarray.

He certainly didn’t impress anyone with this amazing botched run out in Australia’s loss in the 2nd ODI today (with thanks to a rather cheeky You Tuber):

You could say it’s all looking rather rosy for England right now. But let’s not count our chooks just yet. If there’s anything we’ve learned over the years, it’s England sportsmen’s propensity to snatch demoralising defeat from the jaws of over-expectancy and misplaced optimism.

So just in case things go pear shaped in our game against Western Australia, and the mood is ruined, let’s enjoy Sri Lanka’s match-winning ninth wicket partnership against the Canary Yellows the other night:

  • ‘So just in case things go pear shaped in our game against Western Australia, and the mood is ruined’ – England are presently 117/7; the feel good factor has gone already.

    • Ah, but they turned it around and won! We never doubted it for a second. Oh no we didn’t! Honest.
