Kevin O’Brien proving a big hit in Gloucestershire

Big Kevin O’Brien has done it again – and we’re beginning to think that England’s humiliating defeat in the World Cup to Ireland wasn’t such a fluke after all. The huge Irishman, whose liking for cow corner is proving rather popular in farmer-land, scored 119 off just 52 balls for Gloucestershire against Middlesex yesterday. His partner in crime was Hamish Marshall, the Kiwi that wants to play for Ireland, who scored 102 off 54 balls in a record partnership.

Gloucestershire, who used to rule the country in one-day cricket, but whose recent record makes that of their locals rivals Worcestershire look good, registered a massive 254-3. It was the second highest total in T20 history – and I suspect that includes games on the PlayStation too. Unsurprisingly they won the game by a massive margin. All we can say is ‘wow’. That’s our armchair ‘expert’ analysis on this one folks. Wow.

In other news, Marcus Trescothick continued to annoy all England fans by scoring a quick-fire 58 off 24 balls against Glamorgan on Sky. If only he was still available for the national side. There would be no debate about Cook captaining the ODI team – Tresco would do the job; and he’d do it bloody well too. Furthermore, we would never have to see the name Lumb on the England team-sheet ever again.

  • I understand the thinking in bringing Kieswetter back: he has been scoring heavily on the strip of Taunton Tarmac which doubles as a cricket square, and provides a helpful uber agressive balance for Cook.

But Lumb’s selection was indeed odd.

If the selectors wanted to give another chance to another young English batsman who had been unfairly discarded, why look further than “Stevie D”? He has proved he is easily good enough to play as a specialist batsman in ODIs and T20s. Remember that that one bad innings in an Australia ODI came after performing 12th man duties for 3 months.

James – I expect you to back me up on this one, despite your anti-Worcester remarks in the above.

  • James here on my mrs I-phone. I’m with you tarka! Davies hasn’t had a fair crack of the whip yet
