Eoin Morgan for the test side?

  • He is outrageously talented, but his 1st class record is poor. I would like to see him face genuine fast bowling and see how his technique looks. He could be another Bevan or Fairbrother. What’s he like against the short ball? He should be selected for the Lions in the summer – then we can see how he goes. Trescothick also had an average 1st class record when he was promoted to the test team, so a poor county record is not always indicative of talent in the 1st class game. Similarly, Vaughan averaged just 36 for Yorkshire.

As I would like to see Eng play 5 bowlers, there isn’t room for Morgan in my team at the moment. However, if one player had to go I would drop Trott. He hasn’t scored runs for 6 tests, and he doesn’t convince me at 3. I’d like to see Bell move back to 3, and possibly Morgan at 6 at some point if the selectors stick with the 4 bowlers policy.

  • The problem with both Bevan or Fairbrother and also Mark Butcher was that they were incorrectly classed as one day or test players without ever having a descent run in the team. The best players will adapt to all forms of cricket and Morgan has done his case no harm. The best player in the world cup and recent IPL has been Jayawardene, yet he is not a traditional T20 player. Similarly, there is no reason why Morgan cant also adapt.

Morgan is probably next in line for a lower order position with Carberry first reserve for opening / 3.
