County Championship Highlights (July 3rd)

While the Ashes buildup gathers pace, it’s easy to forget that some interesting cricket is being played in the county championship. You can watch a roundup / highlights package of the recent matches here.

The main talking point was Yorkshire’s superb win over Durham away from home. Jonny Bairstow took the plaudits for his fantastic double ton, while Tim Bresnan also recorded his highest first class score. Perhaps he fancies an Ashes recall? Adil Rashid also had a decent game.

In the other division one fixtures, there was a snooze-fest at Edgbaston where the Bears and Sharks both made over 600 each. Six players made centuries in the game. Laurie Evans converted his ton into an impressive double.

A bore draw doesn’t usually make any headlines, but I’d like to give Sussex some love for giving every single member of their side a bowl. I love it when first class matches go all village.

Nottinghamshire revived their season with a good win over my beloved Worcestershire – who basically threw the game away. God’s own county got themselves into a good position in the fourth innings before losing 6 wickets for just 17 runs.

Despite finishing on the losing side, I’d like to mention the performance of cult hero Jack Shantry. The unorthodox left-arm seamer – whose quirky action takes  the expression ‘frog in a blender’ to new heights of absurdity – took 5-48 off 35.4 overs. Talk about economical. More than a third of his overs (13) were maidens. Respect.

James Harris continued his fine form for Middlesex against Hampshire, who now languish at the bottom of the table after yet another defeat. Harris took 8-128 in the match. It’s good to see him fulfilling his early promise. It’s amazing to think he’s still just 25 years old.

In division two Surrey completed a comfortable win over the cheese rollers. Ben Foakes made his first ton for his new county, and young Tom Curran took an amazing 7-27 in Gloucestershire’s first innings. Zafar Ansari – who Google seems to think is James Taylor – chipped in with 6-30. Ansari is an improving cricketer who could have an international future.

In the final match title chasing Lancashire were saved by the rain against Northamptonshire. Twenty year old Ben Duckett’s century was therefore in vain. What a pity for the young man.

Feel free to chip in below if I’ve missed out anything important.

  • If only we had a proper editor rather than general multi-taskers. There’s always some pedant waiting to pick up on every typo :-)

Thanks for the heads up James!

    • Forget the proper editor. The pair of you do fine. The pedants can have their day if that’s what turns them on. Each to his own.
