Congratulations, Sachin

Here’s something to take your mind off the horrors of Perth for a moment.

Sachin Tendulkar today recorded his fiftieth test century – not that it’s likely to prevent India’s impending defeat to South Africa at Centurion.

What an extraordinary achievement. Can it ever be beaten? And without taking anything away from Sachin’s brilliance, would he have scored quite so many centuries if he’d played his home tests on pitches outside Asia?

  • His feat is an amazing one and one that isn’t going to be beaten in a hurry (Kallis and Ponting are the nearest with 38 & 39 tons respectively).

For the record Tendulkar has scored 33 hundreds in Asia (in 108 games or a hundred every 3.3 games). Elsewhere he has scored 17 hundreds in 67 games, or 1 every 3.9 games. His record in India is right in between at a hundred every 3.6 games.

If he’d played all his tests outside of Asia he’d have scored 45 in 175 at the rate of every 3.9 games. By way of comparison Kallis and Ponting score a hundred every 3.8 and 3.9 games, including their home series).

  • Tremendous deduction from the stats! So the answer is yes, but would have taken a handful more tests.
